The facility is the primary research laboratory facility for Amgen, Inc., at their Thousand Oaks, CA headquarters. The building contains five main research laboratory wings, administrative and office spaces, and parking for approximately 250 cars. The structure consists of reinforced concrete floor slabs, designed for a special vibration requirement associated with the laboratory functions, and structural steel interstitial floors to facilitate mechanical/electrical/plumbing distributions. The administrative block is framed with structural steel floors and reinforced concrete shear walls, with subterranean parking provided on a hybrid system consisting of cast-in-place concrete 2-way slabs and 2-way concrete girders. The column spacing and structural framing for the below-grade parking was designed to both maximize the parking efficiency as well as providing the maximum functional flexibility for the administrative and office spaces above. This project was designed in a fast-track manner, with the structural drawings being completed well in advance of the Architectural and MEP drawings in order to facilitate an early start by the General Contractor. The project design was also executed in an intensive team-oriented environment with the General Contractor being an integral part of the design process from the start of the project.
