Designed to use 51% less energy than other buildings on the campus
The Oak Pavilion is a 4-story, $315 million state-of-the-art OSHPD Acute Care facility that was completed in the fall of 2020. This steel framed building features a lateral force-resisting system consisting of special steel moment resisting frames with deep columns utilizing Side Plate® connections. The site is underlain with Young Bay Mud and the south half of the building required 40-50 ft. drilled piers into bedrock. The project was executed using the Design-Build delivery method utilizing OSHPD’s incremental and collaborative review processes. KPFF worked closely with McCarthy Construction and their trade partners to deliver a fully coordinated BIM model while concurrently producing early foundation and steel packages to meet the demanding schedule.
The construction phase of the project presented unique sets of challenges including connecting into the operational existing West Wing building, negotiating a sloping site with an undulating bedrock elevation, and rapidly-evolving OSHPD protocols including meeting on site twice weekly OSHPD personnel.
Civil improvements to the site include schematic design for demolition of the existing site, improvements, grading, drainage, new utility connections to the new structure, and public sidewalk improvements. Work included coordination and design of public roadway improvements to Bon Air Road, the reconfiguration of a 300-space surface parking lot and connection to a new 1,100-space parking structure which includes stormwater quality infiltration bioswales, runoff bioswales, and rain gardens.
