KPFF provided structural, civil and surveying services for a new 178-foot-long pedestrian bridge connecting the Wildwood Trail over West Burnside Street in downtown Portland. The 2-span structure is framed with a structural steel truss with an eye-catching aesthetic design developed by local artist Ed Carpenter. The intermediate support is a concrete pier supported on pile foundations. End abutments are designed to minimize impacts to the environmentally sensitive surroundings and to accommodate limited construction access on along unpaved pedestrian trails that are 3-foot-wide in many locations. KPFF also managed geotechnical and environmental consultants as well as a certified arborist. Public works coordination involved multiple City agencies as the intermediate pier and each end abutment land in a different agency’s right-of-way.
