Cooley Landing Education Center is California’s first permitted, approved and built Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) structure. The CLT roof system was chosen because of its combined ability to span across the open community space, to be pre-finished to match the sculpted wood form of the building, and for prefabrication — crucial to reduce the construction schedule. The foundation system consisting of a spanning slab on grade over an active vapor mitigation system, grade beams and concrete piles to help mitigate all of the potential site hazards.
Providing a much-needed opportunity for the under-served citizens of East Palo Alto to access the natural wonders of the SF Bay, this one-story, 4,000-gsf community facility on a newly reclaimed landfill. It houses exhibits of local natural history, provides meeting and learning spaces as well as a venue for celebrations.
Following remediation of the entire peninsula, civil engineers provided grading, storm drainage, new utility services, site utility coordination and specifications.
