Completed in March 2015, the Scripps Prebys Cardiovascular Institute (SPCI) Tower and Central Energy Plant (CEP) projects were the first phase of a $2 billion, 43 acre, 25 year master plan in the Scripps La Jolla Campus. With a construction budget of $450 million, the seven-story SPCI tower includes 383,000 SF of space with 108 in-patient beds, 60 intensive care unit beds, 6 operating rooms, and 4 cardiac catheterization labs.
KPFF provided civil engineering services throughout the expedited design, permitting, and construction phases to meet the demands of a fast-track schedule. The reviewing agencies included OSHPD, City of San Diego, County of San Diego, and Caltrans. KPFF lead the permitting effort for all agencies, except OSHPD. In addition to providing utility, rough- and fine-grading, horizontal control, and stormwater management (SUSMP and SWPPP) designs, KPFF also assisted the contractor with site utility 3D coordination.
The success of Tower I has led to the design and construction of Tower II where again KPFF has the privilege of working with Jacobs and the McCarthy team. Scheduled to open in 2024, the 433,000-square-foot structure will house nine operating rooms and 108 private rooms for medical and surgical patients. An additional 61 beds will serve patients awaiting or just exiting surgery. A new women’s center with 13 labor and delivery rooms, five pre-delivery rooms and 38 more for mothers and their just-born babies, will occupy three floors.
Recent press for Tower II construction here.
