KPFF served as the prime consultant for the Seattle Department of Transportation’s Mercer West project which reconstructed the entire street grid within the uptown community in Seattle. Design elements included three traffic lanes in each direction on Mercer Street; widened sidewalks; separated and protected bicycle facilities connecting the Lake to Bay Trail and hundreds of ADA ramp upgrades. Work also constructed a new WSDOT SR 99 bridge and retaining walls; installed thousands of feet of SCL underground and overhead facilities; installed new storm drainage and sewer facilities; and relocated water mainlines.
Implemented urban design features included wall textures, new light placements, and City sponsored art. KPFF worked extensively with project stakeholders including the Seattle Center, Seattle Freight Advisory Board, Cascade Bicycle Club, and neighborhood groups, as well as with two adjacent concurrent multi-million dollar projects including WSDOT’s AWV North Portal Team and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation campus construction.
